4.   a.  There were seven new malaria cases during this period. These patients denied use of the prophylactic Chloroquine Primaquine (CP) tablets. This corresponded to increasing number of cases in the Bde, especially of vivex malaria which is highly controlled with the CP tablets. Our urine spot check studies done weekly averaged 75-80% positive.

 
        
 

      b.  Two new cases of Hepatitis appeared in the command. Both were diagnosed as infectious. The etiology of both was unclear. There was no evidence of drug abuse and gamma gobulin was administered to close contacts.

 
        
 

     c.   We followed seven individuals who were on drug amnesty. They were using heroin. We found results and follow-up disappointing and felt they were continuing the use of narcotics, despite the program.

 
        
 

      d.  There was an increasing number of venereal desease cases. Most of those were gonorrhea or “clap”. We saw no syphillis cases. It was felt that many of these cases were contacted on-post with use of Vietnamese Prostituts staying overnight. These contacts were not found.

 
         

     e. During the latter part of April and early May, there was a high number of gastro-intestinal problems. And although cultures and stool samples were performed on many of these, no etiological agent was discovered. Most were attributed as nonspecific gastro enteritis.

        
 

     f.  With the onset of the dry season, heat casualties became a problem. During one day we saw seven cases of heat exhaustion. All were clearly related to scanty use of water at the height of the day at full exercise level.

 
        
 

     6.  a.  Regular weekly inspections for all company areas and mess facilities were held during this period.

 
        
 

     7.  a.  During this period liaison activities included medcaps to Hai Lang District which were held Tuesdays and Fridays.
