Communications:

     (1) During the conduct of Operation GREEN RIVER FM radios were used by all elements to pass the majority or the battalion’s command and logistical traffic. FM communications security sets KY-8 and KY-38 were used down to company level to pass classified information.

    (2) During operations in the HAI LANG area, a four channel tactical VHF radio/carrier system was installed between the TF 1-11rear TOC and the forward CP established at HAI LANG District Headquarters. This system was the primary means for passing non-classified information between these two points and significantly reduced the amount of unnecessary traffic on the command radio nets. A second VHF radio system was established between TF 1-11rear and the forward CP established at FSB HOLCOMB.

     (3) TF 1-11 operated a radio retransmission station at LZ ANNE throughout Operation GREEN RIVER to facilitate communications between TF 1-11 rear at Camp Roberts and elements operating in the southern portions of AO GREEN and AO RED. Field expedient half rhombic antennas were also used by companies operating in excess of 15 kilometers from Camp Roberts.

     (4) FM frequency interference problems that were experienced during the latter part of Operation DAKOTA CLINT were again present throughout Operation GREEN RIVER. The majority of the interference occurred during the first seven days of each month after new monthly frequencies and call signs were issued, and was caused by units from the 101st Abn Div and 2nd ARVN Div. In most cases the interference was intermittent and did not hinder the operation of TF 1-11 radio nets. Several instances of more serious interference were resolved by using alternate frequencies assigned to TF 1-11.

     (5) Overall efficiency and reliability of communications during Operation GREEN RIVER was excellent.
