SUBJECT: Task Force 1-11 Combat After Action Report

26 February 1971

                    (Operation WOLFE MOUNTAIN) (U)

            (1)  Throughout the operation FM radios were the main means of communication used by all elements to transmit the majority of the battalion’s command and logistical traffic  (coordinations and executions).  Radio teletype UHF/AM communication was in conjunction with FM requirements or mission of the commanders TOC resulting in an alternate means of communication.  The teletype communication utilized the KW-7 for security.  The FM used KY-38 in conjunction with the KYK-28 set for mobile down to company level.  The KYK-6 was used with the KYK-12 for fixed communications to the Brigade TOC.

            (2)  During Phase IV while operating in MAI LOC the same means of communications was employed with the addition of a tactical VHF radio-carrier system from the 1-11 TOC to the Red Devil TOC.  This system was the primary means for passing non-classified information between the two TOC’s using a direct line.  Another direct line connected with the 1-11 TOC rear.  This reduced the amount of unnecessary traffic on the command radio nets.

             (3)  1-11 Infantry operated a radio relay station at LZ ANNE throughout the reporting period to facilitate communications between 1-11 rear at Camp Roberts and elements operating in the southern portions of AO GREEN and AO RED.  The relay at LZ ANNE was utilized in the operation by 1-11 at MAI LOC.  LZ ANNE relay station utilized FM equipment with the KY-38and KYK-28 sets.

             (4)  FM frequency interference problems were very little.  There were a few reports of ARVN interference.  This was cleared within a reasonable amount of time reporting to the Brigade frequency Coordinator.

              (5)  Overall efficiency and reliability of communications during Operation WOLFE MOUNTAIN was excellent.
